Dental Exam and Cleaning
A general exam at the dentist will begin similarly to a general medical exam. They will collect dental and family history and take note of any condition which could affect your oral health. When an issue or condition could interfere the cleaning, the dentist needs that information beforehand. Certain conditions can affect an individual’s likelihood of developing periodontal disease or tooth decay. A diabetic patient, for instance, will be at a greater risk. Also similar to a physical, the dentist will want to know about any concerns you have and any symptoms you have been experiencing.
The teeth cleaning will start with a comprehensive appraisal of the teeth and the gums.
The dentist will generally take x-rays as well. X-rays are very helpful when the individual is a first time patient or dealing with symptoms. Each tooth will be evaluated for warnings of possible decay and for pockets near the gums. An oral cancer screening will be important for adult patients. Lastly, if any oral care habits need to change or if treatment will be necessary the patient will be informed and prepared.
